Addressing Affordability: Nobody Should Choose Between Their Life and Their Life-Savings

Christopher Moriates, MD

Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine

 

Dr. Chris Moriates is the Assistant Dean for Health Care Value; Associate Chair for Quality, Safety, and Value; and an Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at Dell Medical School at UT Austin. He is also the Executive Director at Costs of Care, a global non-profit organization curating clinician insights that drive better care at lower cost.

 

Dr. Moriates co-authored the book Understanding Value-Based Healthcare (McGraw-Hill, 2015), which Dr. Atul Gawande called a masterful primer for all clinicians.He led the creation of the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) Cost Awareness curriculum for internal medicine residents, which was described in JAMA Internal Medicine, and featured in a perspective article in the New England Journal of Medicine. He is a founding editor for the “Teachable Moments” series in JAMA Internal Medicine.

 

Dr. Moriates is co-chair of medical education strategy for the International Choosing Wisely Consortium. He created and leads the Choosing Wisely STARS program in the United States. Dr. Moriates also directs the Distinction Track in Care Transformation for the internal medicine residency program at Dell Medical School. He speaks internationally on topics related to educating clinicians about health care value and how to implement high-value care programs.

Prior to joining Dell Medical School, Dr Moriates was an Assistant Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine at UCSF, where he led the UCSF Center for Healthcare Value’s Caring Wisely program, the Division of Hospital Medicine High-Value Care Committee, and the internal medicine residency’s Cost Awareness curriculum.

Dr. Moriates received his Medical Degree from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine, and completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at UCSF.

 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize the difference between total costs of care and patient affordability
  2. Describe the role of affordability in the erosion of trust of medical centers
  3. Identify potential strategies for improving patient affordability to enhance care delivery and outcomes.
