Andy Auerbach discussed the role for randomized trials in digital health innovation, how often trials take place, and increasing focus on non-randomized (but experimental) and post-market surveillance models as ways we will learn about which digital health tools are safe, effective, and useful. Bob Wachter, Sara Murray, and Julia Adler-Milstein published an editorial in JAMA on a paper examining the relationship between the number of patient records that a physician can keep open simultaneously in the EHR and a patient safety outcome capturing wrong patient orders. Their commentary puts the central finding - no differences in error rates between clinicians randomized to the restricted (one patient record open at a time) and unrestricted (up to four records open) groups - in a broader context by describing trade-offs between safety and efficiency in the EHR era. More information can be found here.

Christine Baumgartner, Andy Auerbach, Judy Maselli, and Margaret Fang published a paper "Aspirin Compared with Anticoagulation to Prevent Venous Thromboembolism After Knee or Hip Arthroplasty: a Large Retrospective Cohort Study" in the Journal of General Internal Medicine that shows how aspirin is being used for VTE prophylaxis in people undergoing hip or knee replacement. More information can be found here.
