Frequently Asked Questions

  • What will my patient interaction involve?
You will have opportunities to speak with patients, examine them, and discuss their clinical care with our faculty. You will not be involved in their specific treatment plans or ordering of medications and diagnostic tests.
  • Why do I need to be credentialed in good standing within an organized medical staff (e.g., hospital or other facility) to participate in this course?
Because your participation will partly involve being in our clinical environment and interacting with patients, we have streamlined the standard credentialing requirements. Rather than completing a full UCSF credentialing packet, we simply request confirmation of your approved credentialing status at your local facility. Unfortunately, we are unable to make exceptions.
  • What should I wear?
Suggested attire is business casual and professional as you will be in the clinical enviroment (e.g, no flip flops, t-shirts, or tennis shoes). Also, we will provide a white coat for the sessions where you will be seeing patients in the hospital; however, feel free to bring your own white coat (if applicable).
  • Should I bring my laptop to the course?
Since you will be on the move during parts of the day, it is best to avoid bringing your laptop. You will not need it for any of the sessions.
  • What meals will be provided?
Full breakfast and lunch will be provided daily in addition to other snacks and beverages. You will be well-fed and well-hydrated.
  • What is the "happy hour" listed on the schedule?
This event is the capstone to our course and provides an opportunity to mingle with co-participants and faculty in a relaxed setting. We hope you will join us.
  • Where do I need show up for the course since it's not in a hotel?
The entire course takes place on our UCSF Parnassus campus. Each morning begins with breakfast at 8am followed by sessions starting promptly at 8:45am. The course "home" is located at UCSF Kalmanovitz Library, 530 Parnassus Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94143. Once you locate the library, proceed to the Lange Reading Room (522) on the 5th floor of the library.
  • What are the transportation options to the UCSF Parnassus campus?
    • By car: several parking garages are available and we recommend the Milberry Union Public Garage located at 500 Parnassus Avenue, directly across from the hospital. It is a quick walk from the garage to the library. Public parking rates are ~$30 for eight hours. Visit UCSF Maps or Parnassus Site and Directions for more information.

    • By public transportation: the interactive 511 Trip Planner provides step-by-step instructions for traveling on public transportation – including a door-to-door trip plan with schedules, fares, time estimates, and location maps based on your parameters. Parnassus campus is accessible via Muni street car line N-Judah, which stops at 2nd Avenue and Irving Street. Other Muni bus lines, which stop at Parnassus Avenue, include the 43-Masonic and 6-Parnassus lines.

    • By Taxi, Uber, Lyft, or Sidecar: here you can find a taxi stand, get the number for dispatch, and check current rates. San Franciscans enjoy their ridesharing services including Uber, Lyft, and Sidecar. Click on the respective link to find out more information on how to use the app services with your smart phone.
  • Who can I contact if I have additional questions?
Natalia Loaiza is the Course Coordinator and she can be reached by phone at: 415-476-7931 or email at: [email protected].
