Akshar Rambachan was selected as a DEI recipient for the 2021-2022 UCSF Society of Hellman Fellows award. This fellowship is awarded to support additional research activities for early career faculty.
Equity & Belonging in Hospital Medicine
As we all work together to deliver equitable patient care, this month's equity pearl is to reflect upon our opiate prescribing practices. This study (NEJM, July 2021) explored opiate prescribing patterns in 310 health systems in the US, and found that white patients received 36% more pain medication by dosage than Black patients, even though both groups received prescriptions at similar rates.
K01 Award Recipient
James Harrison was awarded a 5-year K01 by the National Institute of Aging. His research "Placing patient preferences at the center of care plans for older adults transitioning from the hospital at a skilled nursing facility" will involved embedded research at UCSF Health and the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living.
April Publications
This collaboration between the DHM and the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology showed that the electronic health record could be successfully used to determine the severity of acute on chronic liver failure in hospitalized patients with cirrhosis. Read More |
