Brad Monash was inducted into the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators for 2017.

Congratulation to our fantastic staff members who received the SOM SPOT Award: Sherry Chen, Jennifer Feld, Christine Lam, Kat Li, Angela Marks, Teri Rose, Joseph Scarpelli, Oralia Schatzman, and Rosemary Yau. These awards are for “in-the-moment contributions” and designed to recognize significant employee achievements and contributions as they occur for a specific project or task over a relatively short period of time.

James Harrison was elected to the School of Medicine Faculty Council and is also a new member of the UCSF Committee on LGBT Issues.

VitalTalk, a nonprofit organization that specializes in training clinicians to honestly and compassionately discuss serious illness with their patients, has launched a regional hub in the Bay area. UCSF faculty includes Wendy Anderson (hub director), Brook Calton, DorAnne Donesky, Lynnea Mills, Tom Reid, and Eric Widera. The first course is on October 4th, feel free to register below.

Brad Monash and Stephanie Rennke were published in the August issue of San Francisco Marin Medicine on medical education at UCSF. Brad wrote about the CODA program and Stephanie described the School of Medicine's Bridges CMC (Clinical Microsystem Clerkship).

The NIH Loan Repayment Programs (LRP) are a set of programs established by Congress and designed to recruit and retain highly qualified health professionals into biomedical or biobehavioral research careers.

Liz Dzeng was awarded the NIH LRP in their recent distribution.

Aylin Ulku was appointed as the Director of International Electives for the UCSF Internal Medicine Residency Program.

Bob Wachter was selected by Modern Healthcare magazine as one of the 50 most influential physician-executives in the US, his 10th year in a row in the top 50.

Kelsey Rasmussen received the Shining Star Award from the Graduate Medical Education office for her outstanding effort and exceptional work. The award was given to 8 Fellowship Administrators on July 12, 2017.

Sajan Patel was appointed as the Assistant Quality and Safety Director.

Sarah Apgar was named as the Medical Director of the Goldman Service.

Ari Hoffman was appointed as the Value Improvement Director.

July 2017

Sarah Schaeffer has been appointed as the Director of Graduate Medical Education (GME) Diversity for the Department of Medicine.

Sarah, a graduate of New York University School of Medicine, completed her internal medicine residency and was selected as chief resident at UCSF. After chief residency, she was recruited to faculty in the Division of Hospital Medicine at UCSF Medical Center in 2015. She is a recipient of the John A. Watson Faculty Scholar award, focusing on enhancing diversity and equity practices in graduate medical education.

This year, Sarah served as the interim chair for the DOM Residency Diversity Committee and has led a robust effort within the residency program to enhance the recruitment and retention of diverse trainees. In her new role as Director of GME Diversity for the DOM, Sarah will further expand efforts within the residency and newly serve as an advisor for DOM fellowship programs addressing issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in recruitment and training.

Carla Kuon launched the Massage Consult Service in May 2017. In cooperation with the Osher Center, it will provide inpatient massage services for patients admitted to the BMT service. The service was funded by donations from the Healing Hands crowdfunding campaign. Surveys will be collected to record quality parameters such as improvement in pain, sleep quality, and anxiety for our adult BMT patients as part of the pilot.

May 2017

Amy Berger was appointed as Director of Molecular Medicine Consult Service, which is a new hybrid research and clinical program. This program will build multidisciplinary collaborations around patients with unexplained diseases that lack a satisfying diagnosis. The goals are (1) to facilitate diagnosis by creating a mechanism for these patients to access expertise in our scientific community, (2) to accelerate investigations of disease pathogenesis by creating a mechanism for scientists to access patients with rare diseases, and (3) to embed basic science education into routine clinical and educational activities. The program will be piloted July 2017-June 2018.

Wendy Anderson and the UCSF Palliative Care Team presented "Palliative Care Boot Camp" at the 2017 Alumni Weekend.

Arian Hatefi and Ari Hoffman wrote about the controversial health care reform efforts in the Huffington Post.

Liz Dzeng received the KL2 Scholar award from CTSI and a National Palliative Care Research Center Junior Investigator Career Development award. She was also named Global Brain Health Initiative Atlantic Fellow.

Marcia Glass received the Pathway to Discovery Mentor award.

Michelle Mourad was appointed the DOM Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs and Value Improvement.

Maria Novelero was named the DOM Associate Chair for Administration. She also received the Holly Smith Award for Exceptional Service.

Steve Pantilat published a book entitled, "Life after the Diagnosis: Expert Advice on Living Well with Serious Illness for Patients and Caregivers."

Kiran Gupta was appointed as the Medical Director of Patient Safety.

Phuoc Le is one of 20 American leaders selected as 2017 Eisenhower Fellows.

Sujatha Sankaran was named director of Neurosurgery QI and Safety.

Sirisha Narayana, Adeena Khan, and Steve Ludwin were selected as faculty coaches for the School of Medicine Bridges Curriculum.

Rosemary Yau was a recipient for the School of Medicine Great People Award.

For this fiscal year (July 1, 2016 to date), all patients who filled out postdischarge surveys in this timeframe said they would recommend UCSF to a friend or family member. This is a testament to all of the work done by our team on 14 Long, including, but not limited to, our nursing colleagues, case managers, social workers, pharmacists, behind-the-scenes staff, trainees, and subspecialists.

The UCSF Health Palliative Care Program, led by Steve Pantilat, will receive a grant of $3 million over three years from the Stupski Foundation to create a system of care that provides scalable, comprehensive, and coordinated palliative care for all patients who need it.

Ami Parekh was selected as one of 32 fellows of the California Health Care Foundation’s Leadership Program, a part-time fellowship that offers clinically trained health care professionals hands-on opportunities to learn decision making, strategic planning, and executive skills they need to excel as multifaceted leaders.

Carla Kuon was featured in a NBC Bay Area news segment for her Healing Hands Campaign.

Brad Sharpe will serve as interim chief beginning December 1, 2016, as Bob Wachter assumes role as chair of Department of Medicine. Niraj Sehgal will chair the search for a new chief.

A team of delirium experts has been awarded an NIA/NIH grant totaling approximately $3.7 million over 5 years. Andy Auerbach will lead the Dissemination Task Force to help ensure that scientific efforts are disseminated with existing organizations, such as the American Delirium Society and European Delirium Association.

Phuoc Le was inducted into the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators for 2016.

Lynnea Mills, Sirisha Narayana, and Brad Monash received the Haile T. Debas Academy's 2016 Excellence in Teaching Award.

Bob Wachter was named by Modern Healthcare magazine one of the 100 most influential people in healthcare in 2016. He’s one of only two academic physicians on the list (the other is Atul Gawande).

Niraj Sehgal was selected to the Association of American Medical Colleges' Integrating Quality Steering Committee.

Margaret Fang was awarded $3.5 million from PCORI to compare the effectiveness of blood thinners for the long-term treatment of venous thromboembolism.

Wendy Anderson and team received a $213,000 grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation for a project entitled, “Creating free web content to demonstrate the crucial role nurses play in palliative care communication in the ICU: A partnership between IMPACT-ICU and VitalTalk.”

Sarah Schaeffer will serve as the interim chair of the Department of Medicine Residency Diversity Committee.

Sirisha Narayana accepted a coaching position with the Medical Student Education starting Spring 2017.

Ami Parekh was named as one of the 2016 Becker's Hospital Review 50 Healthcare Leaders under 40.

James Harrison is the PI of a Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award. In collaboration with Andy Auerbach, Wendy Anderson, and colleagues, James will develop a program to build capacity for patient, family member, and researcher engagement in patient-centered outcomes research.

Russ Cucina has been named the UCSF Health’s Chief Health Information Officer.

Sumant Ranji was selected for this year's UCSF Excellence and Innovation Award in the Graduate Medical Education.

Sirisha Narayana received the Clinical Faculty Teaching Award from the UCSF School of Medicine Class of 2016.

Adeena Khan won the UCSF Health’s Great Experience Award for her demonstration of compassionate care towards patients.

Madhavi Dandu continues her role as Director for Masters of Science in Global Health Program.

Here are the selected innovative, focused, and achievable grants that are expected to make significant contributions and advance the careers of the faculty members involved.

Aylin Ulku and Ari Hoffman
A grant entitled “Striving for Comprehensive Care: Improving Care and Reducing Readmission Rates for Adult Patients with Sickle Cell Disease” will seek to coordinate PCPs, hematologists, hospitalists, and patients to improve the care of patients with sickle cell disease at UCSF.

Sirisha Narayana
Her grant entitled “Longitudinal patient follow-up: improving medical decision-making and life-long learning through self-directed feedback” will support her to expand her previous work with the Internal Medicine interns. Specifically, she will work to build a system where residents and faculty are able to more easily review outcomes of discharged patients and glean lessons learned.

Sujatha Sankaran
Expanding on previous successes with applying Lean methodology in tribal Southern India, this grant, entitled “Development of a Global Program In Lean/Kaizen” will work with the HEAL Initiative to create a curriculum and implement a pilot program for Lean-Kaizen interventions at two global sites (Liberia and tribal India).

Sirisha Narayana received the Clinical Faculty Teaching Award from the UCSF School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2016. Each year the graduating medical school class presents this award to five clinical faculty members who have been outstanding teachers, mentors and role models to medical students during their clinical years at UCSF.

"Sirisha Narayana is the best teacher I've had at UCSF. She made time during a record-breakingly busy Moffitt/Long service month...to teach both in formal didactics and on rounds. She even made the time to read my unnecessary-long notes and give me feedback on them. At the beginning of the rotation she asked for my goals. Then, every day on rounds she gave me feedback on my presentation...Perhaps most importantly, she created a truly supportive learning environment - something that she worked on actively and that really paid off not only for me but for the dynamic and culture of the entire team. She modeled excellent and compassionate patient care, even with "difficult" patients and their families. She never lost her cool, and modeled professionalism even in the most challenging of circumstances...Dr. Narayana is a treasure and deserves to be recognized for her talent, skill, and hard work at being an excellent clinical teacher."

The SOM Convocation ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at 5:00pm in Cole Hall.

Adrienne Green had been named Chief Medical Officer of UCSF Medical Center and Vice President of Patient Safety and Regulatory Affairs for UCSF Health, as of January 1, 2016. Adrienne has done a superb job as Associate Chief Medical Officer, particularly in leading the Medical Center’s patient safety efforts over the past several years. This promotion will expand Adrienne’s current roles and responsibilities related to the medical aspects of hospital-based adult services at UCSF Medical Center, including Moffitt-Long, Mount Zion and the adult services at Mission Bay. In her new role as Vice President for Patient Safety and Regulatory Affairs, Adrienne will oversee the Departments of Patient Safety and Regulatory affairs with oversight for all accreditation, licensure and certification activities and patient care-related regulatory compliance for UCSF Health. Adrienne will also continue to provide leadership and oversight for UCSF’s care transitions programs and post-acute relationships.

Adrienne is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSF and has been a hospitalist here since completing her Internal Medicine Residency and Chief Residency at Stanford University in 1998. She assumed the positon of Associate Chief Medical Officer at UCSF Medical Center in 2007. Adrienne is committed to implementing an agenda to ensure that our patients experience safe, high quality, high value care and that fosters a culture of excellence and innovation.

Steve Pantilat is becoming our division's first "Distinguished Professor." The celebration of the establishment of the Kates-Burnard and Hellman Distinguished Professorship in Palliative Care and the selection of Steve as its recipient will be on Tuesday, September 1, 5-7pm, Lange Room of the library.

Alvin Rajkomar’s data science innovations to reduce inappropriate blood transfusions were featured in the Hospitalist.

Sujatha Sankaran received the Fullbright Scholarship award to India for the opportunity to collaborate with international partners in educational, political, cultural, economic, and scientific fields. The Fulbright Program aims to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries, and it is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government. As a Fulbright grantee, Sujatha will join the ranks of distinguished participants in the program. Fulbright alumni have become heads of state, judges, ambassadors, cabinet ministers, CEOs, and university presidents, as well as leading journalists, artists, scientists, and teachers. They have been awarded 53 Nobel Prizes. Since its beginnings in 1946, more than 360,000 Fulbrighters have participated in the Program.

Sriram Shamasunder, Phuoc Le, and the Global Health Core take action to provide support in the Ebola crisis and ask for academic institutions to do more during the Ebola crisis.

Steve Pantilat received the CHA Ritz E. Heerman Award from the CHA Board of Trustees for his efforts to improve the quality of care provided by palliative care services.

Phuoc Le and Madhavi Dandu were interviewed about Ebola on NBC. We are proud of our faculty's frontline efforts to combat this horrific disease, and for those covering shifts at UCSF.

Anthony S. Alon Unger received a Global Health Equity Scholars (GHES) Fellowship, which is a one-year mentored research fellowship sponsored by the Fogarty International Center (FIC) and several collaborating institutes and centers at the NIH. The GHES program brings together a consortium that includes the University of California, Berkeley, Florida International University, Stanford University, and Yale University; and 20 affiliated international sites across 16 countries.

Tom Reid received an award at the AAHPM Annual Assembly for his poster, "Characteristics of California Inpatient Pediatric Palliative Care Consultation Services and Comparison to their Adult Counterparts." AHRQ released Making Healthcare Safer II: An Updated Critical Analysis of the Evidence for Patient Safety Practices this month and is available on the AHRQ website. Congratulations to Kirsten Kangelaris, who has been awarded a prestigious 5 year K23 award from NHLBI to study biologic and genetic factors that predict outcomes in acute lung injury among African American patients..

The Global Health Core faculty within DHM was awarded two grants from the Academy of Medical Educators (AME) innovations competition. The grants will commence this July and will run for one year. The grant topics are "Bridging the Training Gap: A Bidirectional Global Telehealth-based Curriculum" and "An Experiential Learning Curriculum in Global Health Ethics Using Simulation."

Stephanie Rennke received a development award from the AAMC with support from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation to disseminate her curriculum, GeriWard: an Interprofessional Curriculum for Health Professions Student Teams on Systems-Based Care of the Hospitalized Older Adult, for submission to MedEdPORTAL.

Steve Pantilat recently earned the designation Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. The Academy is the professional organization for physicians who care for patients with serious illness. Dr. Pantilat received the designation during the Annual Assembly of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association in Vancouver, British Columbia on Saturday, February 19, 2011. The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine's membership includes more than 4,200 physicians and other healthcare professional committed to improving the care of patients with serious or life-threatening conditions. Since 1988, AAHPM has supported hospice and palliative medicine through advancement of clinical practice standards, fostering research, providing education, and through public policy advocacy.

Margaret Fang will be the Chair of the 2012 SGIM National Meeting.

Patrick Kneeland, the residents of the Health Systems and Leadership Track, and the Pathways leadership won the WGEA’s best GME poster award for their poster “A Potent Partnership: Empowering Residents to Lead a Failure-Modes-and-Effects Analysis for Academic Medical Center." About 15 IM residents did a terrific job analyzing our anticoagulation process, determining its vulnerabilities, and effectively presenting their findings to high level UCSFMC committees. Their work was submitted to the Joint Commission as the institutional FMEA, and the educational outcomes including knowledge acquisition and behavior change were impressive.

Cindy Lai received the PISCES School Teaching Award from the third-year PISCES medical students and the Class of 2010 Graduation Teaching Award from the fourth-year medical students.
